Mission Statement

To protect public health and the environment for the communities we serve through planning and operation of a safe, efficient, and economical wastewater collection system.

District Organization

The Stege Sanitary District is an independent Special District of the State of California as reorganized under the Sanitary District Act of 1923. The District is a public agency administered by a duly elected five member Board of Directors. The Board of Directors holds its general meetings once or twice a month on a Thursday at 7:00 pm to conduct the business of the District. Members of the public are welcome to attend these public meetings.

A Glance at the District

The Stege Sanitary District is located in the San Francisco Bay Area. The District was originally formed in 1913 to provide public health services to a then lightly populated area of southwest Contra Costa County. The District provides sanitary sewer services to Kensington, El Cerrito and a portion of the Richmond Annex in Richmond (see Boundary Map).

The District currently operates and maintains 148 miles of sanitary sewers and two pumping stations serving over 35,000 residents residing within the District boundaries. Wastewater treatment and disposal services are provided by East Bay Municipal Utility District, Special District No. 1.

Municipal Service Reviews

Municipal Service Reviews (MSRs) were added to LAFCO's mandate with the passage of the Cortese-Knox-Hertzberg (CKH) Local Government Reorganization Act of 2000 (Government Code § 56000 et seq). An MSR is a comprehensive study designed to better inform LAFCO, local agencies, and the community about the provision of municipal services. Service reviews capture and analyze information about the governance structures and efficiencies of service providers and identify opportunities for greater coordination and cooperation between providers. The MSR is a prerequisite to a Sphere of Influence determination and may also lead a LAFCO to take other actions under its authority.

Compliance Officer

Stege Sanitary District has designated a compliance officer for website disability-related accommodations. The compliance officer has received training in website accessibility and updates the site in accordance with those best practices. Contact our accessibility officer to report an issue.

In addition to testing with users with a wide range of disabilities and coding our website to WCAG standards, Stege Sanitary District regularly scans its website to ensure ongoing compliance, and makes timely changes to any inaccessible changes, if any are found.
